There is only one thing that’s stopping me using Google’s Chrome browser on all my machines, linux and windows alike. It’s a simple feature, that was part of Firefox from the early days.
A master password
I like saving passwords, it’s something I never used to do because of the inherent security risks but thanks to Firefox’s [...]

I’ve spent the last week, on and off, trying to add a card to my Google Checkout account on my HTC Hero. I got a collection of weird errors that I couldn’t explain, I was on a train at the time so thought it might be something to do with me hopping between access points. [...]

Nokia’s Ovi Store

Posted by: Henri Cook In: General Ramblings| It's Wrong.| Life| Technical Support

Nokia Nokia Nokia, i’ve been a faithful customer for years but the Ovi store might be the last straw.
I’ve had problems with you spamming my email in an impossible-to-unsubscribe manner, your poor online customer service and you’ve slowly been falling behind as the IPhone has become more and more prominent.
I’ve just logged in to the [...]

I was surprised this morning to find that McAfee ‘On Access Scan’ had deleted my copy of Spotify overnight saying that it was an example of W32 IRCbot.gen.z – thanks Mcafee, you’re now disabled.
This of course raises an interesting question – does Spotify connect to IRC somewhere? What other reason could McAfee have for detecting [...]

As of the time this is written this is currently impossible – sorry! If anyone finds out how to do it please let me know!

Belief

Posted by: Henri Cook In: General Ramblings| It's Wrong.

I wouldn’t be foolish enough to say there is categorically no god, but I believe that it’s really really unlikely and that basing your life around it is a complete joke — am I an atheist?

This is a copy of a post I entered on BE’s forums this evening, from the responses other customers who know how to measure their packet loss are experiencing similar problems.
Hi there,
I’m on the ********* exchange, I frequently establish long-running SSH connections to public-facing machines (in datacentres) – i’ve noticed that I lose the connection [...]

Phorm

Posted by: Henri Cook In: It's Wrong.

This article on Phorm is genuinely disturbing – how long would this system in use before someone suggests using it to track the activity of, say, paedophiles? After that how long before everyone’s being tracked for ’suspected piracy’ – I have no doubt in my mind that this ‘anonymous system’ can be adapted to identify [...]

ISPs to Police their Customers Usage

Posted by: Henri Cook In: It's Wrong.

This sort of stuff makes me really angry, not because i’m a student and we’re all allegedly bringing down the music industry with our piracy but because no one has thought this through!
Has ANYONE thought about what this is actually going to require ISPs to do? To actually, accurately say that someone is using their [...]

Make card readers optional!

Posted by: Henri Cook In: General Ramblings| It's Wrong.

I’ve helped in the starting of a website to try and make banks reconsider compulsory card readers for online banking customers, they should be optional – they’re bloody inconvenient!
I can’t encourage people to head to www.stopthecardreaders.org and sign the petition enough
